Monday, April 9, Garden update...

Sheryl McGlochlin - Monday, April 09, 2012

Holladay Gardens:

8 - 10 am, Monday: We still have a lot of work to do in our Holladay gardens, mostly weed control around all of the hundreds of peas that are coming up.  Let me know if you are able to come to Holladay and help us anytime this week.  If you can't come on a scheduled time, email me and I'll show you what needs to be done.  I have the right tools to use so it will be fast and easy to do.

Once we get the weeds out between the rows of peas, we will quickly lay black plastic mulch down which will help us eliminate any further weeding in those areas. A very smart tip if you want to eliminate a ton of weeding in your garden!

1 - 3 pm: We're shooting a video today on How to Build your own inexpensive Hoophouse - You are invited to come and watch us film this or just wait for the video that will be posted soon.  Sorry, no children are invited to attend this event.   Call me for the specific address here in Holladay where we are shooting this.  801-278-5313

South Jordan A:  11371 So. 2865 W.

We worked hard last Saturday and got 8 long rows of crops planted.  Crops include: onions, radishes, turnips, lettuce, spinach, kohlrabi (from the cabbage family), carrots, and more is coming including potatoes, broccoli, cabbage, etc.

We need your help in getting more rows planted this week!  This is a very big garden!

THREE Gardens will provide all of our early spring crops - Holladay A & B AND South Jordan A

All of our other gardens are being prepared to handle ALL of our summer crops which will all be planted by Mother's Day, (May 14th).  If you are able to help us with our Early Spring Gardens, plan to go to one of these THREE gardens.  We need you!

Butternut Squash & Apple Soup - Delicious!!

Sheryl McGlochlin - Thursday, April 05, 2012
Yield:  3.5 qts

2 Tbsp unsalted butter

2 Tbsp olive oil

4 c chopped yellow onions (3 large)

2 Tbsp mild curry powder

5 lbs butternut squash

1 ½ lbs sweet apples (such as Macs)

2 tsp kosher salt

½ tsp pepper

2 c water

2 c apple cider or juice

Warm butter, oil, onions, curry powder in large stockpot uncovered over low heat 15-20 minutes until onion is tender.

Peel & seed squash & apples.  Cut into chunks.  Add to pot with salt, pepper, & 2 c of water.

Cook over low heat approx 30 minutes or until very soft.  Puree and return to pot.

Add apple cider and enough water to make soup consistency you like.

This is the recipe as written.  When I make it, I use only olive oil and no salt.  I start with a tablespoon of curry powder.  I also don’t measure the cider and just balance how it tastes when finished.  I’d always prefer adding a good cider to water.  I check for salt at the end to see if any is needed.

Sheryl McGlochlin - Wednesday, April 04, 2012

Here is the info I just sent to all garden members last night.

If you didn't get this email, let me know.

Take photos of whatever garden you are in and send them to me, so I can post them on my website.

Holladay A & B -

The 2 Holladay gardens need the most work this week. Work in Holladay on Wed. 1- 3 pm, Thursday 1 - 4 pm & Saturday 1 - 3 pm OR see CALENDAR. RSVP if possible.

2. Take potting soil/compost from the trailer and put into 4 garden sections in Holladay A garden
3. Weed several rows between the peas in Holl. B
4. Pick garlic, chives and onions
5. Prune grapes
6. Plant oregano
7. Finish cleaning up garden boxes in Holl. B
8. Plant potatoes
9. Fill seedling/potting soil in newspaper containers
10.Plant tomato and other seeds in newspaper containers

33rd & Highland

No work this week in this garden. Dave Novack will continue tilling in compost. This garden isn't quite ready to plant yet. Come to Holladay Gardens instead and help us.

SJ A Garden: 11371 So. 2865 W.

There should be a long row of lettuce growing. These plants need to be watered twice a week. Coordinator needs to talk to Avin, the next door neighbor who oversees the irrigation system of this garden.  I need to know when this will be turned on.  We may need to water this by bringing a bunch of empty gallon milk containers filled with water and do this by hand.  Plant potatoes.  Need someone from So. Jordan to plant pototoes in Holladay then plant potatoes in this garden.

SJ B Garden:  11131 So. 2865 W.

Lorell has been removing a bunch of the branches from this garden and taking them to the dump.  Help us continue to clean up the WEST and NORTH sides of this garden along the fence and general clean up in the garden.  Lorell will come in and cut some of the Elm Tree branches that are hovering over the garden area.  After he cuts those branches down, come in and help us break down those branches that are down like you did before.  Chop them up the best you can.  Kids are great at breaking off little branches into smaller bite size pieces.  Kids don't need any special tools except garden gloves to break branches.  Let me know if you do have a chain saw to get the bigger pieces cut down into smaller pieces.  Make sure kids are FAR from any areas when chain saws are being used. I still don't know when the tractor/tiller will be in to do this garden, so stay tuned.  Just make sure it's cleaned up and everything is out of the way for the tractor.  A bunch of manure will be brought in and tilled into this soil to enrich it before planting. Drip lines don't go in until the gardens are tilled.

SJ C Garden: 9978 So. Redwood Rd

Make sure this garden is also cleaned up completely since a tractor/tiller will be doing this garden as well.  Until we get some of these gardens tilled, there isn't a lot we can do, EXCEPT try and clean up around the fence lines.  After this garden is tiled, we'll install a drip line system similar to Holladay B and So. Jordan B Gardens.
I'll let you know when we do this so you can attend if you want to learn this valuable garden skill, whether you have a large or small garden, it works great. I'll post this as a youtube video also.

Riverton

Hold off of this garden this week. We're not quite ready to work in this garden yet.

West Jordan

Continue to clean up and empty the compost bin. Talk to Geness and John, the garden coordinators about this. We are also waiting for the tractor/tiller and manure to come in before we plant.

West Valley City

Look at the Calendar for details on Saturday, 10 - 11 am for the WVC Garden Open House. Lorell will also check this garden out for me.  If this garden is close to you, be sure to get acquainted with Alan, the homeowner since he was an active garden member last year and is very excited to have us working in his garden.

Urgent So. Jordan Garden work to do on Wednesday, April 4

Sheryl McGlochlin - Wednesday, April 04, 2012
I just send this info to Geralee, coordinator in So. Jordan C Garden but please read if you can help us.  Let me know if you can help.

I just found out that Terry or his son is coming over to till Alene's garden (SJ B Garden), tomorrow, Thursday!
That means there is a bunch of leaves and compost that need to be spread out all over that garden (NOT vines or stalks that would get caught in the blades but leaves and other small organic stuff like that).

We didn't do it before since we all agreed it would get blown around too much before it got tilled but now that we know it will be tilled tomorrow, we need to get that in.

Also, make SURE the dripline PVC stuff is as far back and out of the way as possible so that doesn't interfere with his tilling.

Also, look at the NEW blog posts I just posted this morning, especially regarding the So. J. A Garden on Saturday, 1 - 3 pm.
All help is needed and I will be there.

I'll make sure we have bagels to give to everyone as well.

Saturday, April 7: 1 - 3 pm: South Jordan A Garden, BIG planting day! Come and help us!

Sheryl McGlochlin - Wednesday, April 04, 2012

Come and work with me and others for a BIG planting day, which will only take us a few hours!

We will do a direct sow of hardy and semi-hardy crops in at least half of this garden.

Hardy crops include: Broccoli, Cabbage, Kolrabi, Onions, Radish, Rhubarb, Spinach and Turnip

Semi-hardy crops include: Beet, Carrot, Cauliflower, Endive, Lettuce, Parsley, Parsnip, Potato and Swiss Chard

Garden Videos I'm shooting on Friday & Monday, April 6 & 9

Sheryl McGlochlin - Wednesday, April 04, 2012

I'll post these on my website once they are edited.  If you want to come and watch us shoot these videos, let me know.  It's like an outdoor recording studio, so you'll need to be quiet.

I have a small camera crew is scheduled to come on these dates.  Sorry no children are invited due to the recording atmosphere and time restrictions to get a lot done in a short amount of time.

Friday, April 6, 2 - 4 pm, my home:

Thursday, March 29: Garden Help needed today in Taylorsville Garden, 1:15 pm

Sheryl McGlochlin - Thursday, March 29, 2012

Lorell will be arriving at Taylorsville Garden between 1:15 - 1:30 pm.  Any help we can give him will be MUCH appreciated!

He is loading a bunch of compost from this garden into his truck, then taking it over to the So. Jordan C Garden on Redwood Road and dumping it.

Let me know if you can help with this work, even for 30 minutes.

Taylorsville Garden:  1300 W. 6255 So.

Garden News: March 28

Sheryl McGlochlin - Wednesday, March 28, 2012

Take pictures of the gardens every time you come and send them to me!

Since I can't clone myself and be everywhere to see what is happening all the time, PLEASE do a big kind deed and take photos of what you see EACH WEEK and send them to me!!!  Any progress that is made each week OR even what still needs to be done, take photos and send that to me so I can show people what kind of work we are talking about.   If members will let you take pictures of them working in the gardens, do that as well.  They may be part of my next Garden Youtube video that I post on my website.  I LOVE seeing PHOTOS of our gardens, so that is a big but simple thing to do for me.

What will be planted in each garden?

We are making sure pretty much the same crops will be planted in each garden, for the most part. Each garden will have a wide variety of tomatoes, squash, peppers, beans, and ALL of the most popular crops that are in demand.

The exception...

  • Our early spring gardens:  Holladay has lettuce and peas growing.  These crops will be ready in April  and May.  Those who help with the harvest will be richly rewarded!
  • Also, as of March 27, we planted over 100 lettuce plants in South Jordan A Garden, so everyone won't have to come to Holladay to get salad makings!
  • Our 4 largest gardens located in South Jordan and West Jordan will have a specialty section which includes a lot of melons, corn, pumpkins and other crops that generally take up a lot of space that our smaller gardens can't accommodate as well.

Everyone who helps with the harvest...

will receive a portion of the crops growing in EACH of the gardens, so don't worry if you are working in a smaller garden.  You will not be left out. You will have access to our larger gardens if you'll help with the harvest when the time comes.

Not only help us with the harvest, but help with all of the work that is going on right now.  We need you!

MAJOR progress but continued work needs to be done in South Jordan and West Jordan Gardens this week!

FREE Firewood -

ONLY at South Jordan C Garden:  9978 So. Redwood Road

Help us chop up and take away all the rest of this wood so Lorell doesn't have to load it up and take it to the dump next week.

A BIG thank you to Lorell for cutting and pruning a lot of trees this week!

About the Garden Schedule:

There are set times each week posted on the Garden Calendar, when the coordinator will be available to show you the work we are currently doing.  Once you get acclimated to what needs to be done and know who the coordinator is for each garden, you can work in that garden 6 days a week (sorry, no Sundays) during ANY daylight hours.  The coordinator MUST know who is working BEFORE you go to the garden to work.  You also need to know what to do in the garden (if you are going on your own time) before you start doing anything in the gardens.  The coordinators let me know, almost on a daily basis, what is happening in each garden.

If you can't make it to ANY of the weekly garden schedules for any gardens posted on the calendar, contact me or the garden coordinator directly, to find out what to be working on.  There is a LOT to do right now and we will LOVE your help!

I'll keep posting more times and dates that you can come and work with others.
