Millcreek Canyon

Access Millcreek Canyon: 3800 South Wasatch Blvd.
Breakfast Location: Approx. 3.5 miles up Millcreek Canyon.
LANDMARK - FIND US QUICKLY: Look for two 3 foot yellow cones that I'll set out in front of my Ford Ranger Pickup on the NORTH side of the canyon road a few hundred feet up the canyon road from Millcreek Inn.
Moderate trail will start in Thayne's Canyon, Easier trail will start at Church Fork.

DO NOT TURN INTO the Church Fork Picnic area. Just continue driving a little further east up the canyon and look for the yellow cones in front of my white truck.

Millcreek Canyon is a fee area - Cost $3/vehicle when leaving the canyon, $2 for seniors
Talk to others online or at the hike if you want to carpool.
BEST Carpool Location: 3900 South Wasatch Blvd UTA Park n Ride.

If possible pay in advance OR just pay at the door when you arrive.

Celebrate the opening of our Summer Adventure Season in Millcreek Canyon!

On Memorial Day starting at 6 AM, regardless of the weather, we host our 15th annual breakfast and hike. Come for just a super delicious mountain breakfast or a beautiful morning hike OR BOTH!

Arrive early for the best parking. This is a holiday and the canyons get crowded very early! 

TIMELINE:

  • 6 AM: Set up, build campfire, meal prep - All early birds who help during this hour also eat first and receive the best parking spots! 
  • 7 - 9 AM: Breakfast Buffet
  • 8:15 AM: Start gathering for the hike at our breakfast area. The trail is within walking distance.
  • 8:30 AM: Start hiking or keep eating
  • 11:30 AM: Hikers will be off the trail on or before this time.  Enjoy a shorter hike by turning around at any time, if you prefer. 

BREAKFAST: 

Breakfast Buffet:  $7/person

Bring your own mess kit if possible (plate, spoon, fork, knife, bowl, cup). I'll provide this for those who need it. 

BREAKFAST BUFFET:

  • Crepes - Your choice of chocolate or fruit toppings. Robert is our experienced and skilled crepe maker each year and they are super delicious!
  • Pancakes w/ Butter, Maple Syrup, Whipped Cream
  • Dutch Oven Egg Dish
  • Hashbrowns
  • Fresh Fruit
  • Milk
  • Juice
  • Sausage
  • Bacon
  • Granola 
  • Cold Cereal

HIKING:
Choose an easier or moderate trail: 

Easier: Church fork to Pipeline - 300 ft. elevation gain in first 1/4 mile then mostly flat on a lush green sunny trail, 1 - 4 miles RT (continue further if you prefer)

Moderate: Salt Lake Overlook on the Desolation Trail - 1200 ft. elevation gain in 2.5 miles. Shady forest area. Approx. 5 miles RT 

For those hiking there is no fee, except to get out of the canyon. (Everyone pays $3/vehicle when they leave the canyon.  Seniors pay $2/vehicle.)

We meet at our breakfast area so park and bring whatever you hike with.  Start assembling at 8:15 AM.  I'll split everyone into two groups and we start hiking at 8:30 AM.  At anytime if you want to turn around, you may do so.

Equipment or Gear
  • Water: 1 - 2 liters is generally plenty for our outings. 1 liter or 1 quart per hour of hiking is recommended
  • Sun protection i.e. sunscreen, lip balm
  • Hat
  • Sunglasses
  • Light jacket
  • Warmer jacket for cooler mornings
  • Water proof rain coat
  • First Aid Kit - (carry basic supplies i.e. bandaids, aspirin, Neosporin, moist towelettes, etc.)
  • Cell phone - service may be spotty in canyons
  • Camera
  • Flashlight - Most hikes are in the morning but bring a flashlight anyway for caves, etc.
  • Not needed on this hike:  Kahtoola Micro Spikes (or equivalent). In May and June we still find ice/snow on many trails in high elevations. Plan to carry spikes in your backpack while hiking. Need spikes? I rent and/or sell new spikes. Contact me in advance. $10/rental/outing or $50/pair/purchase.
