When to use Snowshoes OR Spikes

Updated: Dec 17, 2019

Here in Northern Utah, November through April you'll find our year round hiking group wearing Kahtoola Micro Spikes on our hiking shoes UNLESS there are several snowstorms during the season. Generally speaking, spikes are worn a lot more than snowshoes since hiking trails get packed down quickly after a storm.

Buy a pair of spikes from me at a discounted price, $50, reg. $75 if you need a pair. (801-278-5313)

If snowstorms come more frequently and we have plenty of fresh powder snow then snowshoes will be used more often.

Earlier in the season (November and December) we will also use spikes more than snowshoes. Once January arrives and there is more of an abundance of snow, we'll use snowshoes more often.

Regardless of the weather, it's wise to learn how to snowshoe early in the season AND to invest in a pair of spikes.

Spikes are used mostly on icy or more snow packed trails.

Snowshoes are best when there is deeper snow (approximately four or more inches of fresh powder).

You know we are using SNOWSHOES when you see it posted IN THE SUBJECT LINE of an outing. When this appears, text me to reserve a pair since I own 19 pair of quality MSR snowshoes, which are used for my snowshoe outings and classes for $10/pair/outing or class.

A big benefit of renting from me is if the snowshoes are not needed after all, just put on your spikes and you will not be charged for the snowshoe rental.

No need to pay upfront. Just pay at the outing.
